The double standard is reaching a tipping point.

While older men are seemingly celebrated for dating much younger women, their female counterparts are often judged if they date a much younger man. However, it seems that this unfair expectation of women to date men their own age or older is on its way out.

Dating trends are evolving.

One survey found that 81% of women are open to dating someone 10 years younger than they are, and nearly 90% of men are interested in dating someone 10 years older. – today.com

TODAY show anchor delves into age gap trends.

Maria Shriver, Special Anchor at TODAY, sat down with three couples to find out why age gap relationships are becoming more popular. Sitting down with the matchmaker, Julia Spira, Shriver tries to find some answers.

“Women are now going to be dating like men…” – Julia Spira, Matchmaker

“These days, women have the economic power, they’ve got great careers, so they aren’t necessarily looking for somebody to be their equal on a bank statement.” – Spira told today.com

Three couples join the conversation.

46-year-old Tracy Tutor is dating personal trainer, Erik Anderson, 26. Tutor stars on the hit Bravo TV show, Million Dollar Listing LA. Anderson was not threatened by Tutor’s success. He was attracted to her strong work ethic and determination.

“The younger girls, they really don’t know what they want, and they’re kind of lost. And then I feel lost. And then I saw her confidence and I was so attracted by just how she works really hard for what she wants.” – Anderson told today.com

Shriver asked Tutor why she gave Anderson a chance.

“Until I met Erik, I went out with a ton of men who were attracted innately to the fact that I was confident, successful — until we were alone. And then it was, like, ‘Oh, I don’t want you to have too much of an opinion,’ right? Like, I like the idea of you, but not really,” she told today.com

Another couple shares their experience with Shriver.

Even though Laquelle Mills is 6 years older and makes more money than her partner, Malik Rashid, their relationship works. She shared with today.com that she is drawn to Rashid’s ability to communicate.

“I definitely think he’s a better communicator than me. I think this generation, I believe that they’re more fearless, they’re able to say how they feel in that moment, handle it and move forth,” Mills told today.com

Theresa Gage is 16 years older than her partner, Colin Willard.

Willard has his own theory of why more women are dating younger men. “The younger generation of men see that being a good partner (means) making sure your woman’s fulfilled emotionally and mentally and physically,” he told today.com

Despite judgment by others, these couples follow their heart.

Happiness can be found in many ways and age doesn’t have to be the deal-breaker. Tutor spoke with Shriver about being open to possibilities when it comes to relationships.

“The pool is already so small to find the right person for yourself. Why are we making it even smaller? Men don’t. Why should women?” Tutor told today.com
