For Doris Vehar of Mentor, Ohio, it all started five years ago. Her granddaughter, Marissa, was in elementary school, so every morning, Doris went outside to wave as her granddaughter’s school bus drove past her house. Now, Doris’s granddaughter no longer takes the same school bus, but Doris hasn’t stopped waving. Every morning for the last five years, she’s waved at the children on the school bus—and she’s even become “Grandma” to the children, who all love her. So when Doris recently turned 88, the children gave Doris a surprise that made her birthday an unforgettable occasion.

It’s become a tradition. When the number 46 bus drives past Doris’s house, she stands there waving and blowing kisses, reports Cleveland.com.

“Love all 35 of those kids. With umbrella, snow, wind, sun, I don’t care, I see those kids every day,” Doris told the Morning Journal.

Doris recently turned 88, and her neighbor, Kathy, who watches Doris blow kisses to the schoolchildren every morning, wanted the day to be special for the elderly woman. With that in mind, Kathy told the bus driver in advance to make it a special day.

When Doris went out as usual on her birthday to greet the schoolchildren, she got a surprise. They all leaned out of the school bus windows and sang “Happy Birthday” to the woman they call “Grandma.” Neighbor Kathy filmed it all and posted the video on Facebook.

Now the video of the children’s sweet gesture has gone viral.

“This is like a beautiful dream. I go out every day to greet those kids. I love every last one of them. But this year, there is something about this bus. I don’t know what it is, it just got to me. They are so lovable,” Doris told Cleveland.com.
