Barron Trump recently made a rare public appearance as he, together with his family (including parents Donald Trump and Melania Trump) attended the funeral of his grandmother, Amalija Knavs, last week. The 17-year-old son of the former president has made headlines regarding his height for many years; this time, there was no difference.
Not much is known about Barron Trump’s life at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach or how he is doing at school. However, later this year, he is expected to enrol in college – though it’s still unclear as to where he will go.
The Trump family isn’t known for showing affection in public. But before the funeral of Melania Trump’s mother last week, Barron made a gesture to his father that was quite unusual. Now, a body language expert has looked closer at what happened.
The Trump family has many things to juggle, not least the former president, Donald Trump. He has won both the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Republican primary, and most points toward him becoming the Republican candidate for the 2024 Presidential election.
Trump family mourns the passing of Melania’s mother, Amalija Knavs
Meanwhile, Trump has been splitting his time between the campaign trail and the courtroom, and Thursday, he testified in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial, in which the former advice columnist and freelance writer is accusing Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s.
Also, the Trump family is in mourning, as Melania Trump’s mother, Amalija Knavs, passed away some weeks ago.
The former first lady’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs have always been by her side. Since many years ago, they, too, have lived in the United States but have rarely been seen in public. However, there have been occasions where they’ve supported their daughter publicly.
As Donald Trump became the President of the United States – and Melania First Lady – Amalija and Viktor were seen several times at the White House, for example, during their daughter’s RNC speech in the White House Rose Garden.

In her speech, Melania thanked her parents for their sacrifice.
“My parents worked very hard to ensure our family could not only live and prosper in America but also contribute to a nation that allows for people to arrive with a dream and make it a reality,” she said. “I want to take the moment to thank my mother and father for all that they have done for our family. It is because of you that I am standing here today.”
Meanwhile, Viktor and Amalija now had the pleasure of being grandparents. According to Politico, Barron Trump has spent significant time with his grandma and grandpa and even speaks Slovenian.
“Barron almost certainly speaks Slovenian with… Ines, his aunt, who also lives in New York.” author Bojan Pozar wrote in his book Melania Trump – The Inside Story: The Potential First Lady, released in 2016. “[Melania’s sister] Ines Knavs was the one who took care of all the paperwork at the Slovenia consulate in New York so that Barron could formally acquire Slovenian citizenship.”
“We will miss her beyond measure”
Melania’s parents have, according to Politico, been “hyper-involved” in Barron Trump’s life. In 2017, the news outlet reported that Viktor and Amalija would “become more familiar figures around the White House.”
Amalija Knavs and Viktor became US citizens in 2018 after living in the US on green cards, which had been sponsored by Melania.
The New York Times reported that Melania’s parents “split their time among an apartment in Trump Tower, Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida and the suite in the White House once used by Mrs. Obama’s mother.”
While Viktor and Amalija have been very supportive, caring, and present in Melania’s and Barron’s lives, the sad news that the former first lady’s mother had passed away was delivered just weeks ago.
On January 9, Trump shared the news that Amalija had passed away at the age of 78.
Melania Trump wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy.”
Amalija Knavs’ funeral was held at the Church of Bethesda by the Sea in Palm Beach, Florida, on January 18. The funeral was private, and many of Trump’s family members attended.
Melania Trump delivered emotional eulogy at mother’s funeral
It wasn’t all a certainty that Donald would attend the funeral, as the federal judge, Lewis Kaplan, rejected the former president’s plea to go to his mother-in-law’s funeral and delayed the E. Jean Carroll trial. It left Donald Trump furious, calling Judge Lewis Kaplan an “animal.”
In the end, he attended the funeral together with his wife and son and, therefore, skipped a day of trial.
During the private funeral, Melania Trump delivered an emotional eulogy, paying tribute to her mother’s “unparalleled affection”. She remembered her mother as “a ray of light in the darkest of days.”
“She embodied the best mother, wife, grandmother, mother-in-law – a true beacon of love and luxury in our lives,” Melania Trump said, adding that her mother’s “beauty and impeccable sense of style turned the heads of many.”
“She’s a true inspiration, a role model to me, and to so many,” the former FLOTUS said, concluding her seven-minute eulogy with, “Rest in peace, my beloved mummy.”
After winning the Iowa caucuses on January 15, Donald Trump decided to speak of his mother-in-law in his victory speech.
“I want to thank her incredible, beautiful mother who passed away a few days ago,” he said. “And she’s up there, way up there. She’s looking down and she’s so proud of us,” he told the crowd.
“And I just want to say to Amalija, you are special, one of the most special people I’ve ever known,” he added.
Barron Trump picture at funeral leaves fans in disbelief
Further, at a campaign rally, Donald Trump said Amalija is one of the reasons why his son, Barron, was so tall.
“Great people, great parents to all of us, really. Great parents, but also to Barron. Boy, did she take care of Barron,” Donald Trump said. “That’s how he got so tall, he only ate her food.”
Trump continued to joke about Barron’s height, saying it’s a shame that he likes soccer – and not basketball.
“I said you’re gonna be a basketball player. He said, ‘Well, I like soccer, Dad, actually.’ I thought… at your height, I like basketball better, but you can’t talk them into everything,” Trump added, saying that Barron was a “special boy.”
Barron Trump and his parents stood together outside of the church as the media continued to follow their every step. Meanwhile, time and time again, many reacted to the 17-year-old’s height, as it now appears that he is growing incredibly fast.
When the latest pictures of Barron Trump towering over his dad were released, some even thought they were photoshopped.
Several news outlets have reported that he stands at 6 feet 7.
“I thought this was Photoshop, what the hell?!” one person said, as reported by Yahoo. “Wasn’t that the little kid fighting to stay awake at Trump’s inauguration? That was…. 7 years ago. Oh.”
“Unusual” Barron Trump gesture towards his father has hidden meaning
Yahoo thoroughly checked if the picture was authentic, and Barron Trump is that tall. But there were other, more intimate, pictures of Barron and Donald taken the day of the funeral, described as “unusual” by body language expert Judi James.
Outside the Church of Bethesda by the Sea in Palm Beach, Barron was pictured extending a hand of comfort to his father, Donald. It seems that the 17-year-old is reaching up to touch his dad, who was visibly emotional on the day of the funeral.
Speaking to the Express, body language Judi James explained that she saw how Donald Trump acted very differently than usual for the funeral. According to her, it also showed how Barron is taking on more responsibility.
“It elicits an unusual response from their son Barron, too. Clearly tuned into his father’s mood, he extends a hand in what looks like a mimed or truncated embrace that could suggest a desire to show comfort and/or support,” Judi James explained.
“This is an unusual display of emotion from Trump, who appears to be mourning Melania’s mother as a personal loss,” she added.
Moreover. Judi James discussed how Donald Trump “seems to have adopted a pose similar to his wife Melania” and “here “looking much more vulnerable than usual, with his arms falling to the front of his torso and a reflective-looking frown on his face.” ¨
“Affection can make them lose their composure completely”
The fact that Barron was standing between his parents when outside of the church wasn’t a coincidence, Judi James told the Mirror in another interview.
“Donald and Melania have positioned their son between them rather than standing together here, and Trump himself is standing rigidly to attention with his chin raised as though wanting to perform a mark of formal respect for his mother-in-law.
The body language expert concluded, “The lack of touch here could be deliberate. When someone has to mourn in public, it is common to worry that acts of comfort, support, and affection can make them lose their composure completely, and that might be Melania’s concern that she needs to stay in control of her emotions at this very public moment for the ex-FLOTUS.”
