Melania Trump has made it her life’s calling to protect and support her son, Barron. Though the Slovenian-born model was — and will once again be — First Lady, she always put her son first. That said, when her husband returns to the White House for a second term, it appears that Melania won’t be by his side one hundred percent of the time.
Barron Trump has begun his college studies, enrolling at Stern Business School at New York University. Several other students have spoken on what it’s like to have the son of the President of the United States as their classmate, with the 18-year-old Barron receiving Secret Service protection everywhere he goes.
Melania has protected her son from media scrutiny ever since he was a young boy, and that’s not changed just because he has grown up. Now, one Republican politician has spoken out about Melania and Barron’s relationship, revealing exactly how far she will go if anyone tries to harm him.
Melania Trump is once again moving into the White House. In just a few days, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States and will immediately head to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to take up his second term in the Oval Office.
When Donald left the White House in 2020, Melania was reportedly done with politics. She and her husband, along with their son Barron, left Washington for their Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, where the latter enrolled at Oxbridge Academy high school.
Melania and Barron largely left the spotlight after that. They were barely seen for years, as she did everything she could to protect him from media scrutiny, including shielding him from reporting about his father’s various criminal cases. In March 2023, a source told People Magazine that Melania has always been “very protective” of her only child.
“Melania’s friends are her family members. She is a doting mother to Barron and very protective of him. This is nothing new,” the source said, adding that Barron always has been a “first priority”.
Melania Trump ‘expected to mainly live in New York’ during Donald’s presidency
Just as he was about to graduate high school in May, more details about Barron’s life at Mar-a-Lago came to light. A source told the Daily Mail that Melania had locked herself in a “tight” bubble behind the gates of the Trump family’s Palm Beach mansion.
“He’s so regal. He’s a little Melania,’ a source close to Melania and Donald told the Daily Mail of Barron.
Melania has only made one appearance since Donald’s presidential win in November, with many wondering what her plan is for the years to come at the White House. Several insiders claimed Melania would take on all the duties expected of a First Lady. However, she won’t be living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue full-time.
Sources told CNN that Melania is expected to live mainly at Trump Tower in New York, the better to remain close to her son. According to the news outlet, she will also spend time at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
“She has carte blanche – she can be as active in the East Wing or as inactive as she cares to be,” Kate Bennett, author of Free, Melania, told CNN.
Bennett continued by saying that Melania has decided not to use the past four years to build her own platform and brand, as other first ladies, such as Laura Bush and Michelle Obama, have done before her.
“I’m not anxious because this time is different”
The author and former CNN White House correspondent explained that first ladies “can retreat into relative privacy, but they still maintain the platform agenda that they established. That’s a big rift. We can respect her need for privacy, but we have to question how deeply she did not use her global recognition.”
Bennett added: “The missed opportunity of this period between her tenure in the White House has been the lack of a continuing platform or policy agenda that most first ladies build on.”
CNN has previously reported that discussions about Melania’s involvement in the Trump Administration are “ongoing.” She has appointed Hayley Harrison as Chief of Staff. In October, Melania told Fox that a second term in the White House would look different.
“I’m not anxious because this time is different. I have much more experience and much more knowledge. I was in the White House before. When you go in, you know exactly what to expect,” Melania explained.
Meanwhile, Barron Trump’s first few months at New York University appear to have gone smoothly. Since leaving the White House, he has benefitted from Secret Service protection, which the 18-year-old has continued to receive at NYU.
Melania Trump won’t let her son Barron live at a dorm
Due to his studies, Barron will not live at the White House as he did during his father’s last presidential term. He will continue living at Trump Tower, but as mentioned, whether Melania will be at his side or not is yet to be determined.
Several sources tell People Magazine that Melania “will do everything she can” to support Barron’s well-being and ensure his good grades. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old will not get the “full college experience” by living in a dorm.
“Living in a dorm in a college town isn’t in the stars for him at this point,” a source told People. “Barron already has his own political ideas. It all needs to be monitored in light of the situation.”
Another source told the news outlet that living at home is Barron’s best option now.
“Whether or not others think he is capable of being on his own, Melania feels it’s better to be around him as much as possible,” that source said. “I see that continuing.”
Melania’s reason for being close to Barron does not only involve supporting him in his early days at NYU. Two other sources told People Magazine that his father’s return to the White House has played a part.
“Melania worries about the hate in the country and how it falls on her son, who is innocent of any of this,” the source said. “She is and has been a good sounding board for him. They talk about life as it is and how they are in the spotlight. She tries to normalize his life. If that is even possible.”
“She wants to encourage him to make friends”
“Any child in the world spotlight like this would be lucky to have a parent so willing to give her time to help keep his life running smoothly,” a Palm Beach source told the outlet.
Another unnamed source stated: “She wants to encourage him to make friends, be super careful of the haters which can be anywhere — especially on college campuses these days — and keep him mentally healthy by having open communication with him and the rest of her immediate family.”
Paparazzi photographers photographed Barron on his first day at NYU. Meanwhile, many “regular” people attend the school, and it appears they have mixed emotions about Barron.
The Daily Mail went to the NYU campus to speak with some students, one of whom speculated that Barron might change his outlook on life to fit in.
“He’s going to NYU, so if he is at all interested in girls, he’s going to become kind of liberal, I’ll tell you that,’ one student told the Daily Mail.
Another student stated: “My mom is going to want me to marry him.”
Melania Trump was “prepared to chop off anyone at the knees” who went after Barron
Secret Service agents will, as mentioned, follow Barron around campus all the time. A third student stated they felt “really bad for him” as he “did not choose this life.”
A fourth student said, “His dad is his dad and he is own person so I’m not going to judge,” adding that she would consider a friendship. “Of course, who wouldn’t want to be friends with a Trump?”
However, not everyone is thrilled that the president’s son will study at NYU. One student said she would “absolutely not” be friends with Barron.
“It speaks to the privilege that a lot of the NYU kids have. I’m only here because of financial aid,” the student told the Daily Mail.
The media has always been fascinated by celebrity children, and Trump is no exception. In a column for Cleveland.com, Robert Paulson, former Republican mayor of Solon, wrote about the price celebrity children have to pay for simply being who they are.
While it was different for Donald Trump’s older children, Paulson claims that when it came to Barron, Melania was prepared to “chop off anyone at the knees” who went after her son.
“Donald Trump’s adult children Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka proved fair game, with the media considering that they had injected themselves into their father’s administration,” Paulson wrote.
“However, their stepmother, Melania Trump, was prepared to chop off anyone at the knees who went after her then 8-year-old son Barron, and we barely saw him during his pre-teen years. Now that he is a strapping (reportedly) six-foot, nine-inch, 18-year-old New York University student, it will be harder to keep him from public view.”
Barron Trump has changed his accent
While Barron has hardly been sighted in public over the years, hearing him speak has been even rarer. When he was young, Barron spoke with a Slovenian accent, taking after his mother. However, the 18-year-old’s accent has now changed completely.
In a clip where he and his father met UFC President Dana White, fans heard him speak for the first time in years. And it was quite a shock hearing it – as his Slovenian accent had disappeared entirely.
“Hello. How are you? Very nice to meet you,” Barron said.
The video, posted on X, spread worldwide, and fans quickly commented on Barron and his voice.
“First time I’ve ever heard Barron talk,” one comment on the video read, as per NY Post.
“Barron has his Dad’s speech cadence!” a second user added.
A third claimed, “Sounds like Timothée Chalamet,” and a fourth commented on Barron’s interaction with Dana White, saying he is “such a gentleman.
