Chris and his pet rat Lucy live on the streets of Sydney, Australia, and have become a familiar sight for pedestrians and commuters all over the city. The pair are both incredibly friendly and sweet, and it isn’t hard to tell even just by passing by how much they genuinely love each other.
“Almost every day since I started my job in the city Chris and his pet rat Lucy have sat in the same spot, Chris chatting to passersby and Lucy happily munching, sleeping and looking on,” Alyson Pearce wrote on a GoFundMe page for Chris and Lucy. “They are a feature of Sydney city life and I have always smiled when I see them and felt glad they had each other.”
Everyone took for granted that the pair would always be there — until one day, Chris was spotted without his beloved Lucy.
On April 6, while Chris had stepped away to use the bathroom, a woman approached Chris’ belongings, picked up Lucy and walked away with her. Poor Chris was incredibly distraught when he came back to find Lucy gone, and quickly reported the incident to the police, who immediately began the search for Lucy.
The people who saw and talked to Chris every day began to ask where Lucy was, and everyone was so hopeful that the police would soon be able to reunite the two best friends. Chris even made a sign that read, “My pet rat Lucy was stolen on Saturday. Lucy is black and white with a bit of brown.”
Finally, about a week and a half later, officers brought Chris to the police station — and were finally able to reunite him with Lucy.
As it turns out, the woman who took Lucy had seen her sitting all alone and thought she had been abandoned, and took her home to care for her. It was all a big misunderstanding, and everyone was relieved that no one had actually meant to hurt Chris and Lucy.
The officers brought Lucy over to Chris in a box, and as soon as she saw him, she scampered up the side to try and reach him. Chris gently picked her up and checked her over to make sure she was in fact his Lucy, and was overjoyed to realize that she was.
“That’s her,” Chris said in a video of the reunion. “Yep, she remembers me!”
After exchanging lots of cuddles and kisses with Lucy, Chris thanked the officers, and apologized to them for all the trouble they went through to look for Lucy. The officers, of course, were happy to help, and were even happier after seeing Chris and Lucy together. They clearly love each other so much, and just may be the sweetest pair in all of Australia.
